The Fight for an Effective Breastfeeding

Problem Statement

There are great difficulties for the effectiveness of breastfeeding, derived from the difficulty to access training, especially after the birth, situation that puts the newborn at a vulnerable state. Provide effective training to women in public hospitals about the importance of breastfeeding.

Target Group

This project gave training to women between the ages of 16 and 45, belonging to all social sectors, from any educational level and with no distinction of any kind.

Proposed Solution and Hub Activities

The bases of this project were established to solve the problems in a comprehensive manner. The three premises on which we are based are: personalized assistance to mothers in the prenatal, birth and post-hospital periods, breastfeeding advice, and breastfeeding promotion. We base our actions on the structure of design thinking, a methodology for innovation that we consider appropriate for this project: User experience in relation to breastfeeding, creativity and attention to techniques, personal implementation, and execution of care.

For mothers

  1. Inform hospitalized mothers about the economic benefits of breastfeeding over the use of formulas.

  2. Inform hospitalized mothers about the psychological benefits of breastfeeding.

  3. Inform hospitalized mothers about the relationship between breastfeeding and maternal well-being.

  4. Inform hospitalized mothers about the benefits of breastfeeding for the newborn.

For health personnel

  1. Inform the staff involved about the overall impact that health institutions would have if doctors were trained to provide advice on breastfeeding.

  2. Demonstrate that the implementation of breastfeeding advisors is necessary on a permanent basis

For academics

  1. Involving students to provide breastfeeding advice will increase practical-professional experience.

Short and Long-term Goals/Results

Short term:

  • Train, promote and educate mothers, their support networks and health personnel involved in maternal and childcare about breastfeeding.

Long term:

  • Provide personalized attention to mothers so that they can have information and support in relation to doubts or difficulties that may arise during their breastfeeding period.

  • Provide preventive information about breast cancer and demonstration of breast self-examination during counseling.

  • Reduce the workload on staff associated with breastfeeding counseling to improve productivity in their work areas.

Available Metrics

It will be evaluated using the screening sheet where the knowledge acquired by the mother regarding breastfeeding, self-examination, and risk factors for breast CA will be addressed. 469 interviews were conducted in conjunction with breastfeeding training with postpartum patients hospitalized in the rooming-in area. By quantifying the response through the mothers' experience, we determined that education and empowerment are the basis of their learning. Correct training allows the infant to obtain all the benefits that breast milk offers and we ensure that this process is enjoyed by them both.
