The New Divercine 2023/2024

Problem Statement

Low-income Teenagers need to understand and develop critical thinking about social issues related to their community and today’s society to empower themselves and stimulate collective engagement in solving problems.

Target Group

08-16 ages people from low-income communities from São José de Ribamar, São Luis, Raposa and/or Paço do Lumiar.

Proposed Solution

The New DiverCine 2023/2024 is a project for cultural inclusion to bring access to audiovisual and film language for the low-income population of the suburbs of cities around São Luis Hub. This new version has the proposition to use the film language and engagement activities to involve the target group– now expanded to three other cities– in discussing social problems that impact the community where the New DiverCine will be hosted. Finally, to democratize access to cinema and develop critical thinking. The name “DiverCine” refers to the exhibition of films with the theme of diversity and diversion. Its central objective is to use audiovisual language to create an environment of dialogue with communities focused on discussing their reality and needs and promoting civic engagement. Through decentralized exhibitions, it is proposed to democratize access to film culture in the city of São Luís, where the hub is located, and in the four municipalities around. The problem is that many locals who live in peripheral areas and vulnerable communities have the minimum—- or have never had—opportunity to attend a movie theater. The project aims to work for diverse audiences of ages, ethnic origins, and identities. Seeking the sustainability of the action, the films shown in each session will be selected in partnership with community leaders and based on the challenges that affect the daily lives of the residents of the neighborhood, stimulating collective engagement in solutions building.
