Impact

The Street Store Cuernava

We are the first generation that lives with the real effects of climate change and possibly the last ones who can do something for our planet. One urgent action to consider is the impact the fashion industry has. Today the production of fashion generates 8% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Due to the trend of clothes on demand, today we buy 60% more clothes than 15 years ago (McKinsey 2019), thus leaving a significant mark on our planet. The fashion industry uses 93,500 million cubic meters of water every year to manufacture garments and accessories, a volume that would sufficiently meet the water needs of five million people. The Street Store is an international movement that originated in South Africa under the premise of being the first free pop-up clothing store for homeless people. We believe that as an increasingly globalized and conscious society, we need to act so that we all achieve the same rights and conditions worth living. In our city, 40% of people are considered vulnerable due to social deprivation. As homelessness is a global problem and fashion is the second most polluting industry in the world (UNCTAD 2015), we decided to solve the problem through a simple action: "Do you have it? Do you need it? Take it!" There is real pressure to buy and there is no brake to reduce production and excessive consumption. We need a change of mind about production and excessive consumption. Less is more. Giving contributes not only to someone else, but also to the planet. UN Environment believes that if a change in forms of consumption were promoted through measures such as better clothing care and recycling and return programs, it could have a greater impact. Just doubling the time we use each garment, we could reduce the greenhouse gases produced by the fashion industry by half.

Our goal is to impact the vulnerable population in our city with an experience similar to going to a clothing store. Similarly, we can reduce the impact on the environment by giving new use to clothes and generating a new mentality of contribution, use, and awareness on the issue of fashion in our society. We achieved civic engagement through 6 collection centers in the city that were willing to put effort into collecting garments.

- By volunteering, we made the experience feel like buying something and benefited 65 people who were assistants and received more than 200 garments.

- Donating clothes to the vulnerable population of our city. We impact 130 families in our state with footwear and clothing.

- Reducing the environmental impact, giving new use to the garments. More than 1,300 items were reused with a second hand approach.

- Raising awareness through information on the impact that the fashion industry has on society. Impact with interviews and talks shared with more than 80,000 people in our city through social media.

- Broadcasting through three local radio stations and television media.
