Virtual Protection Network

The Singapore Hub project Virtual Protection Network (VPN) aims to raise awareness about, and drive initiatives to enhance, online safety for the youth.

VPN's first initiative represents the "Safeguarding Online Spaces (SOS)" study, which aims to analyze youth views on online safety issues, specifically generative AI (e.g., filters and AI-generated/AI-altered images), recommendation algorithms and cancel culture, as well as their preferences for community support or education to promote online safety. This VPN SoS initiative is currently in implementation - earlier in 2023, the team conducted a survey involving 500+ Singaporeans aged 17-35 and a series of virtual focus group discussion on the topic. The team is currently analyzing and consolidating the findings into a report. This report will be launched publicly in February 2024 in conjunction with Safer Internet Day, with recommendations to be socialized appropriately with relevant 3P stakeholders (e.g., public office holders, government stakeholders in Singapore, Big Tech companies, and NGOs covering women's causes).

The VPN team also plans to work on a media campaign to raise awareness of online harms affecting youth. There are also plans to run sub-initiatives to raise the youth's digital literacy and resilience towards digital safety threats.
