Wealth, Work & Worth

Wealth, Work & Worth is a short documentary film created by Shapers. It follows three ‘frijobbere’: Johnny, Pernille and Majid, who are enrolled in the work-welfare program ‘Socialt Frikort’ that provides short-term flex jobs for people far from the labour market. The director worked with Pernille, Majid and Johnny collecting drug related trash around the drug consumption room. In the film they each define what work is most important to them, where they find meaning and purpose in the everyday and their relationship to money. Johnny collects coins. The coins function as an insurance for him, but the interest mainly lies in the storytelling behind the coins. Johnny paints, and through his art, he expresses his feelings for the friends he has lost, and experiences he had. Pernille’s deteriorating health prevents her from holding a full-time job, but she finds importance in collecting drug related trash in Vesterbro and taking care of her garden. Majid works in a bicycle shop and a café. He uses work to distract himself from his addiction, and has been sober for almost 10 months. Now that Majid is sober, he is planning to keep working on himself and wishes to “be something to someone”.

The aim of the film is to open conversations about progressive work policies and inclusion of marginalized groups into workforce by allowing flexibility to their work. The project also aims to inspire communities to rethink the notion of work itself - what does work mean to oneself?

The project will have a screening of the film open to the wide audience in Copenhagen, with a keynote speaker Stefan Rasmussen, who has a vast experience working with universal basic income initiatives and homeless shelters.
