World Mental Health Day 2021

Problem Statement:

World Mental Health Day falls on 10 October every year. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recognises it as a day to raise awareness about mental health issues and highlight the need to destigmatise mental health. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, strict restrictions such as social distancing, lockdowns and travel bans were put in place. More people are now feeling lonesome. The negative impacts of COVID-19 such as business closures, unemployment and lack of social interactions has exacerbated cases of mental health problems. Mental health is not only affected by our surroundings but also by biological factors. According to an article published by Forbes, mental health is the most neglected form of health. Therefore, further efforts need to be emphasised on the mental health support system and services in the nation.

Activities:

The project focused on developing virtual events that would showcase accessible resources from mental health providers and community support to improve mental health in Brunei Darussalam. Across a three-week period, GSCBSB hosted a total of three forums, seven workshops and seven support group sessions covering various topics ranging from mental health education, battling anxiety during the pandemic, addiction recovery, meditation, art therapy, and many more.

Goal:

  • Spread awareness and include communities who are still struggling to be seen

  • Educating people on mental health and its impact on others dealing with mental health issues.

Objectives:

  • Provide resources, networking opportunities, and mentorship to students and young professionals entering the field of mental health

  • Provide accessible community support
