Awareness and Ownership of a Green City

Awareness And Ownership of a Green City is a program designed by the Green Shapers Team of Kathmandu Hub to focus on the importance of being aware and creating sustainable solutions for environmental challenges. The week-long program is designed specifically for young students (and teachers) to explore the different concepts of climate change in a way that the students will develop a feeling of ownership for related issues. It will also help them develop creative and long-term solutions to create a better environment through various intensive thinking, interactive and practical exercises.  The curriculum has been designed to be immensely enjoyable and memorable at the same time.

The program is structured to help young students visualize environmental issues through a local lens and think of solutions that would equip them to solve these problems at a local and global level. Throughout the process, the students will be engaged in various group and design thinking activities, training, and presentations. Through the medium of story-telling, students will create stories revolving around the theme of creating Awareness and Ownership of a Green City.

Also, to support this curriculum in the longer term impact, we have created an activity-based book for young students named - 'Kalpavriksha'. This book will go hand in hand with the Climate and Environment Education Curriculum. Kalpavrikshya aims to teach students the basics of climate change and emphasizes their roles in helping to curtail climate change. The activities are designed to support students to apply critical thinking to key concepts around climate change in a fun and engaging way. The students, through Kalpavriksha - will be equipped with practical skills to address climate change issues and ensure that students and other stakeholders - teachers, schools, and families, take ownership and become accountable towards their community. In the first round, we have worked with 1500 young students on the impacts of climate change in a local and global context. This book also introduced Nepali terms regarding the environment and climate change to young students, probably for the first time. We would like to thank everyone involved in the process, including Climate Reality Project, WWF Nepal, and the entire Global Shapers Community.
