City Challenge: Tech for Social Good

The Edinburgh Hub is focused on developing solutions to help Edinburgh become a city of ‘active bystanders’; individuals who effectively respond to emergency situations.

This project aimed to reshape how residents of Edinburgh respond to cardiac arrests and hopefully reduce the number of deaths from this condition each year. To do this, the Hub collaborated with a range of diverse stakeholders (city planners, sociologists and government) to engage and connect them with a view to generating new and pioneering ideas to tackle this problem. The onset of the fourth industrial revolution presents opportunities for innovative solutions. The project's multidisciplinary group looked to explore how technology can play a role in increasing citizen engagement, as well as helping first respondents to be more effective.

The objectives of the project were the following:

- Reduce number of deaths in cardiac arrests through improvement in first aid behavior by better educating first respondents.

- Researching the feasibility to make technological tools available in critical spots in Edinburgh to facilitate first aid on site (result upon completion: not currently feasible with resources available)
