Design for Good

1. Poorly designed GovTech leads to poor tech utility

Most government bodies in the past few years have adopted tech in some form or the other and there are a lot of different tools that get built right from file management systems to data capturing tools and to reporting tools. While the tech adoption is going well, the ‘design’ part, the UI/UX part of the tech is largely ignored. While this may seem small at first glance, the impact on outcomes is quite significant.

An example: Anganwadi workers (More than 1 Million in India) use an app that captures critical child health data. Assume the design of the tool that captures key health parameters (like weight, malnutrition symptoms etc) is not user friendly, this would lead to huge lapses in data integrity.

2. Well designed tech could directly impact citizen focused outcomes

Picture this: An app that a frontline health worker is very user friendly, this leads to better data capture. Better data capturing leads to better insights and better insights can lead to better policy making overall directly impacting people lives on the field.

Mechanics of Delivery:

Hub & Spoke Model

● Central hub: Responsibility of GSC Project members, connecting government departments to designers, with/without facilitation with consulting firms

● Spokes: Designers assigned to projects, owning and providing sound design/feasibility report

● KPI: Primary is number of projects delivered; Secondary is number of designers on board

Milestones and Timelines:

1. Delivering 3 major projects in the next 1 year

2. Partnering with > 5 designers/firms in the next 1 year

3. Ensuring satisfied relationships on both supply (designers) and demand side (govt)
