Flood Relief Colombo

In May 2016, Sri Lanka was struck by severe flooding which resulted in the displacement of many people. Colombo Hub initiated a system with five phases to assist the persons affected:

  • Phase one was the Rescue and Response phase where Shapers helped coordinate the relief effort, collected funds and deployed vehicles to help with donations.

  • Phase two was to deploy immediate aid.

  • Phase three was helping to clean houses and send personal care packs.

  • Phase four was long-term rehabilitation.

  • Phase five was working with Environmental Scientist and Disaster Resilience expert Shayani Weerasinghe to look back on lessons learned in disaster relief.

The goals of the project were:

  • Providing emergency relief to persons affected by natural disasters.

  • Improving disaster relief skills of Hub members.
