Fundraiser for 3-Year-Old Adheew

The 3 years old Adheev Nikshith De Silva was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma of the Left Proximal Femur and is currently receiving treatment at the Apeksha Hospital Maharagama, under the care of Dr. Wasantha Rathnayaka. Dr. Rathnayaka and Dr. Srinivas Chirukuri (Consultant Orthopaedic Onco Surgeon) have identified the ‘Rotationplasty’ surgery as the only treatment method. And this surgery required for little Adheev to travel to Prakriya Hospital in Bangalore, India, as this surgery is not available in Sri Lanka. Ewing Sarcoma is the second most common bone cancer after osteosarcoma, often originates in the long, large bones of the body, including the hip, thigh, shin, chest, and arm bones'

What is Rotationplasty?

Rotationplasty is one of several types of surgical procedures that can be used to treat malignant bone tumours, such as osteosarcoma or Ewing sarcoma, which occur near a child’s knee (in the lower part of the femur or upper tibia bone). This unusual procedure preserves the lower leg, attaches it to the thighbone, then uses the ankle as a knee joint.

Project Update

This GoFundMe Campaign and local fundraiser was in support of the main campaign which was led by Global Shapers Colombo Hub (Sri Lanka) in partnership with Wakan Films (USA), and Centre for the Advanced Learning of Mindfulness (Sri Lanka/UK). Once the target was achieved, the money was directly deposited to Prakriya Hospital in Bangalore, India. The entire cost for the surgery including 6 days stay at the Prakriya Hospital in Bangalore was around $6000. The Colombo Hub managed to help out with raising USD 3,600 for the family to contribute to their fund-requirements. Post surgery his parents brought him to meet a member of the project team and shared their gratitude. He is completing 8 rounds of Chemo every 21 days post-surgery as a treatment plan.
