Lyrics Lounge – Open Mic held for malnutrition fundraising

Problem Statement:

With the contemporary economic crisis in Sri Lanka, malnutrition is a severe issue prevailing among the children scattered around the island. Caretakers not being able to secure sustained employments / livelihood and not having access to sustainable chain of food / nutrients sources, have resulted in their children having access to less-than-ideal meal provisions, therefore developing into malnutrition in medium to long term. Malnutrition is a silent evil, that the causes ripple effects on children’s’ education, health and well being and overall standards of living.

Proposed Solution:

The project is comprised of two phases, first phase is a public Open Mic event held on 10 December 2023, in order to raise immediate funds to purchase of necessary food items for 163 children with malnutrition in Kytes island in Northern province. In addition to that, creating awareness about the core-issue is helpful in solidifying the cause. In the second phase of the project, the hub aims to create further awareness among the target communities (families suffering from malnutrition) on home gardening and also donating seeds in order to gain self-sufficient means of obtaining food on their tables. Second stage of the project expected to kickstart in 2024.

Project Objectives:

  1. Raising funds to purchase food items for the target community

  2. Creating awareness among the participants of the Open Mic event about the severity of the malnutrition among local communities

  3. Empowering the improvised communities in the Kytes with learnings on home gardening and providing them with seeds, therefore some level of food security can be initiated at their own ends, having some control of the food value chain, thereby helping to combat long term malnutrition in the community
