Magic Collar Initiative for Street Animals

India is home to a large number of street animals. It is estimated that there are over 50 million street dogs and cattle in India. According to data from the NGO, Blue Cross, between November 1 and December 31, 2015, around 1,115 injured dogs were rescued from the roads in Chennai city following accidents. There are so many more animals of course, who do not even have a chance to be rescued and simply die on the roads. The situation is similar across all towns and cities in India.

In an effort to reduce the number of street animals who are mowed down by vehicles, especially during the night hours when visibility is a major challenge, the New Delhi hub has started an initiative to put reflective collars on animals in partnership with the NGO, People For Cattle in India (PFCI). These collars consist of a reflective cloth stuck on a nylon tape which reflects the lights coming from vehicles thereby helping motorists to spot the animal.

PFCI has successfully launched the magic collar initiative in multiple cities and over 2,000 collars have been put on animals till date. The New Delhi hub recently supported the launch of the magic collar campaign in Mumbai in collaboration with IIT Bombay. As part of the campaign, 1,100 collars will be put on dogs and cattle.

In a short span of time since the launc of magic collars, the initiative has been replicated in several cities across india with the involvement of several animal welfare volunteers and NGOs. So there is tremendous scope for replication of this initiative.
