Unseen Harmonies

Problem statement: Persons with disabilities are not represented in mainstream creativity and entertainment. In Sri Lanka, the disability community faces stereotype biases resulting in a gap in opportunities and inclusion in social structures. 


 


Target group: Persons with visual impairment. 


 


Proposed solution: Unseen harmonies aims to enable representation by showcasing the talents of the disability community enabling rightful claim to spaces in terms of representation. The project focused on supporting a choir consisting of persons who are blind to perform Christmas carols at the One Galle Face Mall in line with Christmas and the International Day of Persons with Disabilities for the second consecutive year! The event was held on the 22nd of December 2022 and was a lively occasion of music and inclusion.


 


Hub activities: A performed Organizing and supporting the logistics of travel to the venue for the choir, logistics of venue approval, marketing the event on social media, on site logistics for the event.


 


Short term goals: Breaking stereotypes of victim mentality, platform to showcase talent and skills of the blind community. 


 


Long term goals: Reclaiming mainstream spaces and events for inclusivity, representation by enabling accessibility.


 


Impact:


-         The choir had 10 members who received the opportunity to sing in public. 


-         There were around 300 viewers


 


Partner: We partnered with Enable Lanka Foundation, Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka and Big Heart Community for this project.
