Community Climate Resilience

Problem Statement

After Austin went through a number of unprecedented freezes, including Winter Storm Uri in 2022, it was clear that many Austin residents lacked the information and tools needed to prepare for and endure extreme weather events.

Target Group

Empower at-risk communities in Travis County to enhance personal health and property safety during extreme weather events through effective resiliency strategies.

Proposed Solution

The Austin Hub is focused on providing climate-at-risk communities in Travis County with crucial awareness, training, and materials to bolster individual and community resilience against severe weather, including unexpected freezes.

Hub Activities

  • Engagement: 14 community leaders from Community First Village actively participated in our inaugural session.

  • Knowledge Enhancement: Participants reported a significant increase in their preparedness knowledge and awareness of the life-altering effects of severe weather.

  • Resource Distribution: We distributed materials aiding survival responses and emergency preparedness.

Short and Long-term Goals

The short term goals for the project were to train and deliver supplies to community members to reduce possible freeze related injury and property damage. Additionally, to educate attendees around climate change and the effect on neighborhoods. Long term goals include supporting more proactive community resiliency planning and support to combat effects of extreme weather events.

Available Metrics

Metrics for the project include: number of kits delivered, number of community members trained, number of community members who receive help/support from fellow trained neighbors.
