Darba Vide - Work Environment

Problem Statement: Small changes for great impact – Latvian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) tackling climate change by improvements in environmental practices at the workplace.

Target Group: The project targets small and medium businesses and people working in them.

Proposed Solution: Darba Vide encourages SMEs to participate in a competition with other companies, combined with a list of tips and more detailed suggestions to save various resources at the workplace and improve internal environmental practices. The main activity performed by SMEs will involve receiving a detailed list of challenges - upon completion, they will receive score points and be able to see the saved resources (water, CO2 and other).

Hub Activities: The project activities include:

  • Designing environmental sustainability challenges to stimulate team building, knowledge or awareness-raising, for example, planting a company tree, holding a vegan day and watching informative films on the topic. The activities will be performed in and out of the office, also involving external partner visits and lectures on the topic;

  • Hosting an environmental sustainability competition on social media platforms;

  • At the end of the 4-week programme, all companies will obtain: (1) a compilation of their green impact in terms of CO2 emission reduction; (2) a toolkit comprising best practices for promoting sustainability in the workplace after the competition;

  • Employer survey about ensuring both environmental and mental sustainability in the workplace while working remotely.

Short & Long-Term Goals/Results: The project aims to:

  • Introduce at least 40 people to sustainable thinking and how to employ resource-optimizing practices at their workplace;

  • Involve at least 4 SMEs from different industries in a 4 week long sustainability practice challenge;

  • Receive at least 50 responses from employers to the survey indicating their sustainability practices;

  • Over 200 downloads of the results of the employer survey.

Available Metrics: The project so far has achieved the following:

  • 4 businesses participated in the pilot project in total;

  • 40+ people were introduced to Darba Vide lessons;

  • 4 months worth of materials with tips, lessons, and best-practices shared;

  • 50+ tasks targeted at improving resource usage at the workplace executed.
