Girl Up Project

Problem Context - Girls, especially the vulnerable and marginalized in northern Nigeria and Kano State, tend to have poor confidence and low self-esteem in themselves. There has been some progress in the girl child school enrolment through primary and secondary education. However, a good number of girls schooled in the public sector don’t go past acquiring O'level certification, this puts them at risk of going into early marriage. There exists a stereotype in which young girls believe that the epitome of success is marriage, putting out the belief that the woman’s ultimate role doesn’t go past being a wife and mother, thus impeding their aspirations, autonomy to make decisions, and ability to skill up in becoming more. Purposeful and intentional investments in educating and developing the skillset of the girl-child goes past improving her quality of life but has a ripple effect cutting across her immediate environment to future generations.

Proposed Solution - This project provides a well-structured program for these girls from marginalized communities to receive hands-on training in market-ready skills and to also empower them with tools and resources to monetize these skills. Beneficiaries of this project will then help transform other individuals to better serve and be useful to their respective communities by helping them to overcome some social ills such as discrimination, deprivation, and gender inequality, especially against girls.
