Graduate Internship (GSC-STEAM Internship)

The rapid growth of technology and its presence and application in our everyday lives has seen the workforce requiring a different set of skills to meet the needs of today’s digital age. Unfortunately, our graduates leave universities with vast knowledge but not the skill set to match employment opportunities anywhere in the world. This situation places a great risk on the future of work in the community. The Kano hub of the Global Shapers Community, in partnership with Steamledge Limited (an Education and Technology company), have developed a social impact and human capital development program that will prepare graduates from Nigerian universities for the needs of the contemporary workforce. The focus of the internship program is to give an opportunity for Nigerian graduates with little or no work experience to skill-up and get certified in various market-ready technology skills needed to succeed in the modern and future work-place. In addition to digital skills, interns will also learn “soft skills" like how to work in a team, how to write a resume and cover letter, and public speaking skills, among others. They will also have sessions on topical global issues that are part of the Global Shapers Community impact areas like climate change and mental health, among others. As part of the programme, participants will engage in at least one volunteer/community development or outreach project organised by Kano Shapers. Lastly, interns will have the opportunity to participate in a 6-month mentorship programme (covering 3 months of the internship and the immediate 3 months after) in order to get career guidance and enable follow up to evaluate how the internship has impacted their lives. The goal is to train and impact 200 interns over a period of 2 years (2020 – 2022)

Goals:

  • To train and impact 200 Interns throughout 2years (2020 – 2022)

  • To provide work experience for recently graduated or unemployed individuals with little or no work experience.

  • To provide a platform for fresh graduates to learn relevant and up-to-date technical (digital) and future workplace skills

  • To expose interns to social and community needs, and inculcate in them the drive to try to improve the state of their communities.

  • To expose interns to the ethos of the Global Shapers Community

  • Interns learn skills while helping Steamledge and Global Shapers deploy some of its services and activities through community projects

  • To improve Nigeria’s employability rates
