MENA Climate Literacy Initiative Salé

What is the project’s problem statement? The problem we are addressing through the 'MENA Region Climate Literacy Initiative' is a critical lack of awareness and action among children and youth in our region when it comes to climate change. This issue is primarily attributed to a significant gap in climate education. Moreover, it reflects a broader challenge in the MENA region, where there is a failure to adequately equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed to comprehend and tackle the urgent global issue of climate change. This deficiency is underscored by recent findings from Education International's 'The Climate Change Ambitions Report Card' for 2022, which revealed that the MENA region scored significantly below the global average in climate literacy. Our initiative aims to bridge this knowledge gap and empower the youth of our city and the broader region to become informed, engaged, and proactive advocates for climate action and sustainability.

What is the project’s proposed solution? On collaboration with 17 Hubs from the MENA region, the MENA Climate Literacy Initiative Salé Hub project is targeting young people aged between 13 and 18 years old, and we are focusing on:

  • Awareness: to increase awareness of climate change and its impact on individuals, and the world.

  • Empowerment: to encourage and empower youth to take action on climate change.

  • Culture Change: Foster a culture of climate-consciousness through education and community engagement, by hosting events, and workshops.

  • Distributing educational materials and resources on climate change, tailored to the needs and interests of our target audience.

  • Collaborate with local organizations and leaders to expand the reach and impact of the project. What are the hub activities for this project? We aim to organize training and educational workshops on climate change, and fun activities in a public secondary school in Salé. What is the project’s short and long-term goal?

The Short-term goal is to hold training and educational workshops on climate change aimed for 200 young students in our city on climate change mitigation and adaptation. And in the long run, we hope to raise awareness of climate change among 1,000 young students and empower them to take action in their communities.

The desired outcomes we hope to see from this project include a substantial increase in climate change awareness among young people in Salé City. We aspire to witness empowered youth who are actively engaged in addressing climate challenges and advocating for sustainable practices in their communities. Who are the project collaborators, if any?
