Oasis Almaty – Public Water Fountains to Cut Single Use Plastic Waste

Oasis Almaty is a water drinking fountain and a bottle-refill station which provides free pure water to the public. This project is aimed at a reduction of single use plastic waste and a promotion of sustainability habits among the population. The first Oasis was installed in July 2019 in the city centre of Almaty. The fountain provides pure water which goes through the 4-stage nano-filtering procedure. Its construction is portable and can be moved across the city to its most densely populated locations. The Oasis was highly welcomed by the public and already took its place in the urban infrastructure of Almaty. Having delivered a successful launch of the first drinking fountain, the Hub wants to roll out their initiative across new areas of Almaty and Kazakhstan. The Hub's mission is to make everyone feel their contribution to saving the environment and reducing the consumption of plastics. The first Oasis was launched using the grant of the WeAlmaty initiative designed and run by a coalition made up of the British Council, the Kazakh-British Technical University, Almaty Akimat and the Almaty Development Centre, and funded by a grant from the European Union.

The objectives of Oasis Almaty are

  • to cut single use plastic bottle waste,

  • to educate population about environmental and sustainable development issues,

  • to promote a healthy lifestyle and proper water intake, and

  • to create new landmarks of Almaty city.

The project impact is measured using ‘a counter of unused plastic bottles’ installed at the facility. Every 0.5L of water consumed saves one single use plastic bottle. During the first 3 months after its launch, a single Oasis facility saved more than 66 thousands single use plastic bottles, which roughly equals to 1.8 tons of unused plastic material.
