Global Shapers at Tokyo Hub and Lean In Tokyo, a nonprofit organization for women empowerment, are leading a research project that aims to support women who are feeling the lack of confidence for their career.

During the COVID19 pandemic, we observed 82.6% increase in the suicide rates of Japanese women. Many of such distressing results come from the lack of support systems that help stressed women to speak up about their concerns and support each other. It is extremely difficult for women to speak up about their self-esteem and even more, offer their help to each other in Japan’s gender-exclusive work environments.

In our research, we have already found out that women feel less confident about their skills and accomplishments than men do so in their workplaces. The majority of those women have also answered that there are currently no support systems in their workplaces.

Our goal is to appeal to corporate leaders to build support systems in their workplaces for working women based on our research report. Through individual interviews and a survey, we hope to collect voices of those woman who have once thought that they are ‘worthless’, and then ‘leaned in’ to overcome their own challenges by participating in internal communities and/or mentoring services.

We are also interviewing D&I / HR leaders at companies that have already been taking actions to support women’s mental health. In today’s divided society, GSC Tokyo firmly believes that there is a strong need to support each other, regardless of our differences, and lean in together to improve our lives towards the better future. 

Our goal is to support working women through delivering their voices to companies, about their need to have a support system at the work place, so they can have more confidence, have a safe and comfortable working environment. 

Target will be corporate leaders and employees who work at companies without peer support systems for women.
