Plant my Age

According to the Kenya Forest Service, the forest cover in Machakos County is 3.4% which is below the minimum recommended target of 10% by UNEP. Nairobi Hub sought to contribute to afforestation efforts in Machakos through the plant my age project. Tree planting is scientifically proven to be one of the best and cheapest ways to reduce carbon emissions.

Building onto initial tree planting activities that the hub conducted in Embulbul in Ngong and Kabuku in Nyeri, Kenya. In 2020, the hub partnered with ABC Makutano Primary School in Machakos County and Miti Alliance to educate 50 students of about ages 7 to 14 on tree planting and after care through the plant my age campaign which the hub uses to challenge people to plant as many trees as their age. In collaboration with the teachers, parents and other community members the hub planted 150 trees.

Hub Activities:

Structuring lessons on climate action plan.

Training students, teachers and members of the community on tree planting and after care.

Planning the logistics of the school visits, seedling sourcing and tree planting exercises.

After care check ups on the trees.

Conducting campaigns to challenge youth to plant as many trees as their age.

Identifying and establishing relationships with partners.

Short & Long-Term Goals/Results:

Increase the forest cover to surpass the minimum recommended 10% and instill a habit of reforestation among community members.

Increase food security among the community given some of the trees planted are fruit trees.

Pupils in the visited schools became more conscious of their environment.

Raised awareness on environment conservation and protection.

90% of the trees planted grew beyond the high risk stage.

Available Metrics:

150 trees were planted at ABC Makutano Primary with a survival rate of 90%.
