Public Space for Political Discussions ساحة ومساحة"”

Political and socio-economic development requires citizen participation to drive change and ensure accountable government. With little active citizen involvement in political life, public officials in Lebanon are unresponsive to their constituents and to their basic rights. On the 17th of October 2019, people of Lebanon went to the streets in thousands to protest against the bad socio-economic situation of the country after the government's announcement about planned taxes on gasoline, tobacco and online phone calls. Tripoli Shapers want to have a role in this country-wide, non-sectarian protests, so they created "Seha w Maseha", a space for political discussions lead by Tripoli Shapers Hub's very own Obeida Takriti. In “Nour Square”, in the centre of Tripoli city where thousands of citizens from Northern Lebanon are gathering to protest, the space organizes daily sessions/discussions to provide people with the right to speak and to discuss. In addition, the space made sure to tackle the right of protesting, why we protest and the different peaceful ways to face public authority. Day after day, the space is evolving, not only by the number of people attending the discussions but also by the diversity of political and socio-economic topics that are covered.

The first objective is to facilitate political discussions in public spaces with active citizens who are looking to come up with solutions in the political, social, and economical sphere. The ultimate goal is to support leveraging political awareness among citizens as a first step toward high and inclusive political participation.
