SDG Student Influencer Challenge

Problem Statement: The project seeks to educate school-going students about sustainability, climate change and related sustainable development goals' awareness by offering them related digital courses. The aim is to make children more conscious about the reality of climate change, utilizing the expertise of Shapers in climate education, creating an environment for children to make content about climate and also to give them insights and direction about climate-related careers.


Target group: The primary target group is students from grades 8 to 12 in schools in Kochi. The pilot has been initiated in 21 schools of Kunnathunad constituency in Ernakulam district of Kerala.


Proposed Solution: The approach that the hub is taking is to utilize the expertise within the community with the help of sustainability experts to be able to train the next generation of innovators and the growing citizens of tomorrow with the civic sense and ability to view sustainability as an important facet of day to day living. The aim is also to raise awareness of the SDG goals and its relevance to our daily lives. To foster this teaching in young students, Shapers, with the support of our collaborator S.L.A.T.E., will be working on providing high-quality digital content, encouraging healthy competition and knowledge gain through quizzes and similar competitions in partner schools and producing research in the area through the sustainability experts in our team. The inaugural launch of this challenge will take place in 21 government and aided schools in the Kunnathunadu constituency in Kerala, in sync with the ongoing implementation of S.L.A.T.E.'s first phase.


Hub Activities: The Kochi Hub project team will utilize the technical provisions and expertise of its partner entity for this project to be able to create educational content about sustainability for students. The project team will set down the guidelines and themes or educational quizzes in the area of sustainability and conduct competitions across 21 schools. There is also the proposal to affiliate with Sophia University, a private university in Tokyo, Japan to produce a whitepaper/research paper on the broad area of sustainability and the future.


Short-term Goals:


  • Ensure management of content creation and digital content delivery for students by Kochi Shapers for the courses to be delivered to students in 21 schools.

  • Conduct sustainability quizzes and competitions in schools.

  • Conduct talks on sustainability-related topics for students by experts in the field.


Long-term Goals:


  • Support 11,000+ students by educating them through digital education, and interactive quizzes and introduce sustainability and climate as career options.

  • Collaborate and produce a whitepaper/research paper on sustainability and the future with Sophia University for climate and sustainability education.

  • Extend the program in affiliation with other Shaper hubs in Kerala.

Project Collaborators: The project is implemented in partnership with S.L.A.T.E (Sustainability, Leadership & Agency Through Education) in Kochi, which is a platform designed according to PBL (Project-Based Learning) that is stipulated by NEP (National Education Policy) 2020.
