Shape Ho Green Project

Most educational institutions in communities like Ho, Volta Region, lack basic waste collection & disposal mechanisms. The lack of dustbins at regular intervals is teaching the public and especially school children to litter, making our schools and cities unclean and unhygienic. One of the major threats to our environment has been plastics. Plastics pose such a great threat to humans since their manufacture have no expiry dates as they are non-biodegradable which means they can’t be decomposed by the activities of bacteria in the soil. Most plastics in Ghana find their way into the ground. This produces leachate, which seeps into bodies of water that also serve as sources of water supply. Considering the non-biodegradable nature of plastics, recycling is the best known solution. The “Shape Ho Green Project” aims to empower primary school children to be good stewards of the environment, by inculcating eco-friendly habits and contributing more to the greening of their World. The project seeks to increase their awareness of environmental issues and to provide a better understanding of the potential adverse societal effects implied by excessive waste pollution. It also aims to develop sustainable, local recycling solutions. Students and teachers have pledged to help reduce, reuse and recycle waste products they generate both at home and school, and then sort them into organic, metallic and plastics for recycling. To ease the segregation of waste, Global Shapers Ho Hub has donated dustbins to schools. The Global Shapers Ho Hub is committed to promoting the “Shape Ho Green Project” in Schools for environmental education and management, which ultimately will raise students’ awareness of environment sustainability issues, through classroom study as well as school and community actions and to encourage children to take an active role in how their schools can be run for the benefit of the environment. The Global Shapers Ho Hub will inspire a patriotic nationwide culture of “Reuse, Recycle, Reduce” by creating a mass hysteria of proper waste disposal by children both at school and at home. Every selected school will establish waste recycling clubs to kick start and signify its commitment to the “Shape Ho Green” campaign.
