Taboo Talks

"Taboo Talks" starts conversations on key topics that people shy away from addressing. Through this project the hub has been facilitating a safe and friendly space in classrooms for kids to share thoughts/concerns, answer difficult questions and bust myths and taboos.

Through this project, the hub is working with 550+ girls from government and low income private schools to help them become confident in their identities as young people by breaking menstrual taboos. Nearly 80% of the girls in the schools involved do not use scientifically-recommended menstrual products. By means of workshops and doctor-student interaction sessions, the hub has been enabling over 550+ girls in Hyderabad's government schools to become more confident in their identifies as young women. Furthermore, the hub has also raised funds of 350k rupees to provide biodegradable sanitary pads to these girls and help them experience a happy period.

Many of the girls have health issues related to poor diets. It is not enough for them to mentally reject period taboos – they also need the right tools to do this. In this process, the hub also piloted a dialogue on Sustainable Menstruation at the local Salesforce office which had great participation from employees.

The project is now exploring workshops to address sexual abuse, sex education and sensitization of boys about adolescence.
