Technovation

Problem Statement: There exists a big gender gap in STEM related careers mostly due to cultural stereotypes that see less women taking up careers in STEM across the world. There is a need to educate and mentor young girls especially from marginalized communities such as slums and foster homes who face challenges accessing learning materials in Kenya to learn STEM subjects.

Proposed Solution: Technovation is a global tech education nonprofit that empowers girls and families to become learners, creators and problem-solvers. Nairobi hub partnered with Safaricom Women In Technology to enroll 16 girls from 5 schools in Kibera to the program. This is a 12-weeks program that will see the girls identify a problem in their community, create a problem statement, develop a mobile application to address the problem, create a business plan and finally a pitch video for submission to the global competition in April 2021.

Hub Activities:

Volunteer to take the girls through the technovation curriculum.

Source for technical mentors to teach the girls how to code.

Review business plans developed by the girls.

Session logistics( venue, transport, snacks).

Mentoring the girls on life skills.

Short & Long-Term Goals/Results:

Bridge the gender gap in STEM related careers by teaching tech skills to young girls from marginalized communities.

Improve living conditions in slum areas and foster homes through solutions developed by girls attending the program.

Create mobile applications to solve problems experienced in slums in Kenya.

Empower young girls to learn how to create mobile applications.

Teach problem solving and tech skills to girls from marginalized communities.
