Challenge: Limited literacy rates and access to quality education in low-income, post-insurgency settings hinder the development of children, particularly those in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps and underserved communities in Adamawa State. Boys are at risk of being recruited by extremist groups and girls face gender based violence.
Solution: The project focuses on empowering underprivileged children to improve their literacy and learning outcomes. The Read to Rise Project aims to develop an evidence-based accelerated education model using innovative tools such as Mavis Pen and book-box library systems to foster literacy and learning in fragile settings.
Hub activities for this Project:
-Implementation of the TaRL Model: Piloted for six months using the EGRA test for baseline literacy assessments.
-Educational Tools Deployment: Provision of Mavis Book/Pen and book-box libraries for accessible learning resources.
-Advocacy and Policy Engagement: Developing and promoting a charter of demand for education reforms in Adamawa State.
-Community Partnerships: Collaborating with local partners to scale the initiative.
-Capacity Building: Training teachers and volunteers to implement the model effectively.
The project's short and long-term goals include:
Short-term: Enhance literacy rates among target children through scalable pilot models and localized interventions.
Long-term: Establish a replicable accelerated education framework to improve education access and quality in fragile settings across Nigeria and beyond.
The available metrics are:
-Literacy improvement rates: 57% success in baseline EGRA test for TaRL pilot.
-800 children of school age reached so far and engaged with learning materials. 300 culturally relevant books donated.
-Enhanced community participation. Parents are engaged in a home-based school feeding program, and auxiliary teachers are sourced from the community.
-Adoption of Charter of Demand for Basic Education by 17 Education in Emergency implementing oganisations.
