The city of Bulawayo is plunged in a serious climate crisis coupled with environmental degradation. The 2024 El Nino induced drought worsened the situation with the city major dams drying up. The heavily affected small scale farmers who survive on backyard farming. Among all the groups affected, young people bear the greatest brunt of the climate crisis as they are more vulnerable to malnutrition. The project targets enhancing the nutrition and well being of school going children in Bulawayo. The hub proposes to adopt and implement Aquaponics farming systems to enhance food production among schools thereby enhancing food security and nutrition. The activities will include training young people to run the aquaponics systems. Also , the activities will include physically setting up the aquaponics systems in selected schools in Bulawayo. It is envisaged that these systems will enhance food security among school children to supplement the ongoing Schools feeding programs in the country by the Government. Moreover, it is envisaged that the project will enhance environmental sustainability while promoting climate justice farming practices that will go a long way in reducing the carbon footprints. Currently, the hub has managed to do a prototype of the aquaponics system in Collaboration with Zimbabwe Redcross Society. The project collaborators are Zimbabwe Redcross Society and Dot Youth organisation.
